The "S" Word

Mrs. Nurse Boy here.

(It is Tuesday and I have a True Story to share! Yep, I am linking up with Rachel and Mr. Daddy today.)

Recently I found myself having an uncomfortable conversation with my 1st grader. You see, we TRY to protect our kids' young minds from that of the world. We carefully monitor what TV shows they watch, what movies fill their minds, what video games fill their time, and what music fills the air in our home and cars. Call us over protective, but we like to call it common sense.

The other day, Bruiser was playing an NFL game on our PlayStation 2. It was handed down to us from my very techie brother. (Ya know, because PlayStation 2 is so yesterday.) All of the games came from my brother as well. I had carefully sifted through the hand me downs and only had the "approved" games out for play.

Or so I thought.

I was in the room when Bruiser suddenly gasped and said, "Mom, they just said the "S" word!"

At first, I didn't know what was more horrifying: Them using the "S" word on a PlayStation game, or Bruiser knowing what the "S" word was!

Bruiser was horrified, too. "Mom, I can't believe they said the 'S' word!"

"I know, Bruiser. That IS awful," I said. Then, my curiosity got the best of me. "Can you whisper the word in my ear?"

He leaned in closely and, in a very disgusted voice, whispered, "They said, 'Shut up.'"

PHEW!

I took a deep breath as I reassured him that he is right, that is a very unkind thing to say to someone.

I LOVE THIS KID!

Awww! You dodged a bullet there, huh? :)

I took flak for having "protective" parents, and I take flak now for being "protective".

Tough. My kid's ability to grow up a few years before having unkind garbage in his head is more important. They're only kids for a little while - they'll know it all soon enough, right?

(And you've got a sweet one on your hands :)

I think you're going to get a round of 'awwwwws' for this one. That is so sweet. I taught Gary when he was younger the difference between 'bad' words and 'ugly' words. That seemed to work.

That is a cute story. I had parents like you guys...

I remember quite clearly the first time I dropped the "S" bomb in front of my Mom.

She gasped and said: "I would hate to have in my hand what you just had in your mouth" LOL

Keep up the good work, Great Parents are hard to come by these days...

You're going to get a big AWWWWW from over here. Wish I could say the same about my kiddos... I like to think I'm overprotective, but they SO know the word 'shut up' (mostly b/c I have a terrible habit of using it as slang for 'oh, you're so stupid' when teasing Daddy Bub).

STUPID.

How dare they? Those pixar peeps haven't checked our rules, have they?

Awww, how adorable. I think it is great that your kids are still innocent enough to know that is not nice to say.

*phew* is right. Too cute. Bruiser is adorable. I remember the first time my kids did something like that...they said that the "F" word was on the side of a truck while I was driving. I looked over & saw the word Freak. I was glad they thought the F word was freak. :)

Hilarious! Once one of my boys became convinced that the A word was angel and inappropriate use of the word Angle was similar to inappropriate use of the word God, a big no-no at Boy House. It took a couple years to convince him that there were worse words than angle.

What a sweetie that Bruiser is.

Very sweet!

I wouldn't say you're "over-protective" -- you're just taking your job as parents seriously, rather than taking the easy way out. That's something to applaud, especially now-a-days!

I just wanna smoosh that little guy. I love to hear about other parents keeping a close eye on TV, games, movies and stuff... there is WAY too much out there that is NOT what we want filling our kids heads and WAY too many parents figure if it's on at 7am then it's good for kids. Sorry, TV execs don't decide what's good for my kids, I do. Congratulations on raising such a sweet little man!

Libby told me one day that a friend had used the "p" word! That's right the "p" word! When I asked her to tell me what the p word was she fearfully whispered "poop!" Kids are so funny!

The 8 yr. old grandson was reading over my shoulder, and was very concerned that Bruiser was going to get his mouth washed out. When I showed him what the "s" word was, he breathed a sigh of relief.

awww! That's sweet. That is so great that he didn't think it was the real "s" word! Unfortunately my kids know a few of the really bad words! I have a problem when I'm driving. When they hear me, they kindly say from the backseat "Ahem Mom!" and give me very disapproving looks!

*big sigh of relief*
And here I had myself all prepared for the BIG *S* word, but thankfully it was one of the other, more tame ones. We don't say shut-up in our house either and no, you are being over-protective. You're being good parents in a day when most anything goes. Boundaries and limits are so important, especially to children! Good job, Mrs. NB!

At first I thought the "S" word might have been sex.I thought he was going to ask you about it.

I wish shut-up was the worst "S" word that came out of peoples mouth.

Ugh! So glad he is so innocent as to not even know what the other "s" word is. What a sweetheart!

Aw, you're doing a great job over there.

Definitely not the S word I was expecting.
