Our Family's Bitter/Sweet Life

Let the Good Times Roll...

Mrs. Nurse Boy here.

This week our family took a step back in time. I guess you can say we went retro. We ventured into a place where Micheal Jackson's Billy Jean could be heard at full blast and the smell of stale popcorn filled the air. When we were handed some "vintage" tan roller skates with orange wheels and frayed laces, I felt like a fourth grader all over again.

Only, Doug Dorothy was no where to be found.

Yes, we went to the All School Skating Party. It was everything I remembered. There was the black carpet decorated with nauseatingly busy neon designs, disco balls were spinning out of orbit, little twerps were zipping around the rink, the place was filled with zitty preteens, and I even spied some creepy young adults who were much too old to be hanging out at the roller rink. Oh, and let me not forget the Limbo Line. I couldn't do it then and I wouldn't even think of trying it now.

Truth be told, Sweet Pea and I just observed. Dimples and Bruiser put on roller skates for the very first time. Nurse Boy bravely joined them after about a 25 year break.

It was a sight to behold.

I laughed until I cried.

More than once.

Dimples was playing it cautious and cool. He is, after all, a fourth grader. He was hoping to keep his dignity. Let's just say, he wasn't very successful. Thankfully, neither were most of his friends. They were dropping like flies all night.

Bruiser was certain he would lace those bad boys up and everything would come naturally. This was not the case. His feet were moving 100 miles per hour while each foot would venture into opposite directions. He did the splits more times than I can count.

Nurse Boy was hopeful that his body would remember all the right moves. I kindly reminded him that he was not allowed to injure himself since he is the sole provider for our family. He laughed, grabbed Bruiser's hand, and skated off for a full 30 seconds before they were both on the floor. Thankfully, there was no need for me to dial 911. But, don't think I didn't have my cell phone ready.

Honestly, Nurse Boy rocked that roller rink. He left the boys in the dust and tried out all of his old tricks; however, this time he wasn't trying to impress an awkward fourth grade girl. But, I have a feeling that he may have made an impression on some muscles he didn't even know he had.

I am certain that my fourth grade self would have loved to hold Nurse Boy's fourth grade hand during the couples skate. I am pretty sure Doug Dorothy had nothing on Nurse Boy. Too bad we didn't know each other then. Something tells me that he used to rock the roller rink in his acid washed jeans with his collar standing up while sporting a Swatch watch. I certainly knew how to rock the banana clip. Plus, my teased, Aqua Net bangs helped me glide through the rink at a rapid speed.

But, it would have never been. Girls had cooties and boys were gross back then. Not too mention, Doug Dorothy WAS quite the catch. (He was the only boy in the fourth grade that didn't pick his nose or pass gas at the lunch table. Hey, my demands were simple back then.)

Let's just hope Dimples and Bruiser weren't humiliated by their father, who may or may not have uttered, "In your face!" as he sped past some of Dimples' classmates.

Maybe some things shouldn't be revisited after all.

I like those pictures. Adding four inches to your height is very slimming.

Doug Dorothy eat my dust, she may not have held my hand and skated the rink, but she went home with me and thats what matters.

I had a very bad experience with roller skates and avoid them like the plague. It's still fun to watch others skate. Looks like ya'll had a great time.

I love skating. Our school does the same activity. It is so much fun. My favorite part is when I get to couples skate with my Milo. My hubby is the one who watches. Way to go NB.
Glad everyone is still in one piece.

I used to love roller skating. I just don't bounce as well as I used to anymore, so I avoid it like the plague.

Cute pictures.

I would have been sitting on the side with you...and I totally would have told Jdaddy not to hurt himself as well. LOL

I love Nurse Boy's comment!!

I loved this! Rockin' the roller rink! How fun that would have been. We have a rink only 5 minutes away! You should have held his hand - just not when he was falling :o)

I totally laughed out loud at the "in your face" comment! This post brings back memories: aqua net bangs and banana clips, couples skate and disco lights...oh the preteen angst!

OH my word! I about died laughing at Nurse Boy's comment! How funny!!
And I'd take an added 4 inches to my short self any day!
BUT my rollerskating days are long over, I'm afraid!
Looks like you all had a great time and rolleskating does bring back alot of wonderful memories for me!
The one and only time that the hubs and I went skating, he accidentally tripped me with one of his skates...we were skating a "couples only" skate beneath the disco balls *sigh*....and our skates became entangled and I went down hard on the wheels of his skate. My hip and thigh were black and blue for days and I wore it like a badge of honor, even if no one else could see it. :-)
Loved the post, Mrs. NB!!
Oh, and pink is my second favorite color!!! :-)

That looks like fun! We had debated on going to the roller rink with the kids a couple weekends ago. We even went to Target and put the kids in skates! But, then decided we were sane and doing that would be INsane!

And Doug Dorothy has nothing on Mr. NB

All the skating rinks from my heyday have been torn down. I would love to take my niece to one. (I could take her ice skating though)

I could rock a banana clip too. lol

Great! Now I've got the song "Wildfire" stuck in my head. That's the song we would skate too in fifth and sixth grade. Does that date me as bad as I think it does?

NB have you lost weight? You look so thin.

Oh you could have been writing my history of the skating rink there...lol. I totally rocked the rink when I was younger. I could skate like nobody's business. I would not ever try it now haha.

I am totally cracking up ... at a million different parts of your recap. Those were priceless! See how many people can relate? I could totally picture him in acid wash denim jeans, collar up... and you with a banana clip and bangs.

Cuz that is EXACTLY what my 8th grade All School Skate was like! Only I didn't have a cute boyfriend and I was fantastically klutzy!

Thanks for the laughs!

Ah, the skating rink. They all look the same, don't they?! In 7th grade, that was THE. PLACE. TO. BE. ;) I don't think I've been skating since.

This is great! I wish you had video, but the photos are good too! It looks like Bruiser is helping his dad there, actually.
