Mrs. Nurse Boy here.
I have a child who knows no fear. Never has.
Big, strange, even unfriendly dogs? No problem!
Strangers? Bring them on!
Heights? Love 'em!
No parent in sight? Heaven!
This was the child we caught, at 18 precious months old, standing on top of the kitchen counters digging through the tall cabinets for......wait for it......prescription meds. (And, you thought we were good parents. Shame on you!)
His favorite past time was to unload bookshelves. Every shelf. Every last book. The pile was then an awesome place to practice his surfing skills. Because surfing is a common past time in the Midwest. Um...yeah.
It is no surprise we nicknamed him Bruiser. Ever since he could walk (or, should I say run, since walking was always considered too boring, practical, and calm) he has had bruises all up and down his shins. Well, not bruises, so much as badges of honor.
No corner, crevice, or hidden space is safe when Bruiser is around.
I have always prayed Psalm 91:11 over each of my children. It states, "For He will give His angels charge concerning you, to guard you in all your ways."
Bruiser always put the angels to the test. (Come to think of it, maybe I should have prayed this in the next room so he wouldn't consider it a challenge...)
I would watch this amazing child from the bench at the park or my cozy chair in our backyard and marvel at how many times this precious, endless ball of energy would fall in slow motion.
In! Slow! Motion!
No one else saw it. Just me. Nurse Boy was never looking at the right moment and the moms at the park were always socializing. I thought I was crazy. Maybe in need of glasses.
Then, one day we went to the local indoor mall playland. Bruiser spent the afternoon climbing colorful, soft, plastic tents, rocks, bridges, boats, and waterfalls. I spent the afternoon talking to a sweet, lonely mother. I was enjoying the company and Bruiser was enjoying the physical outlet.
Then it happened.
Bruiser tumbled backwards and head first off of the plastic waterfall.
In. Slow. Motion.
And, my new friend witnessed it.
I didn't say a word. I just waited to see if she saw what I saw. She immediately looked at me with eyes as round as saucers and said, "I have never seen a child fall like that."
It was official. I wasn't crazy. (However, I just might be in need of some glasses...dang aging eyes.) And, I better keep praying for my active, little guy.
And, I've never stopped.

You should try to catch it on video, that would be a great one to watch!!
Bruiser sounds just like my child. In fact, are you sure you weren't riding about my child?
He broke two lamps, a t.v. and a VCR all before he was two. Every time I ran to go to the bathroom he would take it as an opportunity to get into something (I have video proof).
Once when he was about two he put his rocking horse next to the kitchen cabinet and put his plastic chair on top of the kitchen counter.
He was going to use them to climb up on top of the fridge to get at something I had put up there (a broken toy to be fixed).
By the way, when Bruiser gets to be 16 he will still have scratches and bruises, and he will still have cuts, he will still have scabs on his knees, and he will still say they are no big deal and he has no idea where they came from.....yup, that's MY child....why go around and take the easy way when you can push your way thru and get all banged up in the process.
Looking at his photo, he looks like quite the mischief maker. I think I might have to start whispering similar prayers for my two year old, he's taken to jumping off the taller pieces of furniture without a thought. A few months ago he scared the pants off me when he stood at the top of our six foot slide, reached for the first rung of the monkey bars and just hung there waiting for ??? mom to come charging to the rescue? That I did. I've yet to see the slow motion falling. You've got to get that on video. ;)
Bruiser would fit in perfectly at Boy House. I love the slow motion thin, I know exactly what you mean, it kind of sends a shiver down your spine like you can almost see those angels slowing the fall.
Keep praying for that adorable boy.
Emily was never a climber. She was always tall enough to get whatever she wanted. Yipe! LOL
I would be a ball of nerves-My six year old grew out of being like that-and I was a wreck until he did!
(He still gives me occasional moments...)
Bruiser sounds like my youngest, The Ogre. She got to where she knew all the E.R. workers by name.
Sounds like this wild child thing is common... doesn't make me feel any more at ease that I have one too, er, make that two too. Except mine dont fall in slow-mo. Mine are running along and in the blink of an eye they are on the ground. I have no idea what has happened even though I have been watching.
Then there's Lion splitting his chin open, that was an education...

I cried when I found out I was having a boy first time, after my daredevil brother I knew I was in for a life of crutches, fractures, lost skin and major bruising. I had no idea how I would cope. 4 years down too many to go... I might make that prayer my own.
I'm hoping that this book will motivate me to really buckle down and start saving more. We can always improve!
And no broken bones yet? Good! My friend's son broke his foot in three places last week. He's six months younger than Jonathan. I thought for sure Jonathan would do it first. He's not as crazy as your Bruiser, but he is getting there!
